MCE 07-05 Gaude mater miserorum

Edition

Motet

The motet is transmitted with some errors (for instance, a missing brevis rest at m. 17 and a superfluous Mi e at m. 21), although the scribe corrected some rhythmical mistakes. A flat is notated at m. 19 before an f'' in the C, but the sign does not seem to be significant. Concerning a possible emendation of the parallel fifths between A and T at mm. 26-27 proposed by RIFKIN 2019 and here discarded, see the Introduction.

Gaude, mater miserorum,
Quia pater praemiorum[1]
Dabit te colentibus
Congruentem hic mercedem
Et felicem[2] poli sedem
Sursum in caelestibus[3].

Rejoice, mother of the unhappy,
because the Father of all rewards
will give to those who venerate you
a fitting recompense
and the happy home of Heaven
high in the celestial regions.

Domine Iesu[i], propitius esto mihi peccatori.

Lord Jesus, be propitious to me, a sinner.

Gaude, humilis beata,
Corpore glorificata,
Meruisti maxima
Fore, tantae dignitatis
Ut sis sanctae trinitatis
Sessione[4] proxima.

Rejoice, humble blessed,
glorified in the body,
you deserved to be the greatest,
of such dignity
that you are the nearest to the holy Trinity
in the sitting order.

This text was edited according to D-Mbs 3154, ff. 41v–42r. Except for some minor mistakes (‘celestitibus’ for caelestibus in the Cantus) the text was emended in three major instances: first, in line 2 the word ‘primiorum’ (unknown form, possibly wrong spelling for primorum, ‘of the firsts’) has been emended to praemiorum (‘of the rewards’) because this seemed more in line with the context, in which God is described as rewarding those who venerate the Virgin Mary. Secondly, in line 5 ‘felici’ has been corrected to felicem: the adjective should be concordant with the noun sedem (‘felicem poli sedem’, ‘the happy home of Heaven’) and was thus changed into an accusative singular masculine, instead of a dative singular. Lastly, in line 13 the word sessione was wrongly copied in the manuscript, both in the Cantus and the Tenor, as ‘fessione’ and has thus been corrected. For further information on this text, see the General Commentary.
