Whom did you see, shepherds? Say, tell us. Who has appeared on earth? We saw the son in the choir of angels, Saviour and Lord, he to whom the mother gave birth. Whose name is eternal and |
[1] annuntiate] anuntiate Librone 1 T, annuncite Librone 1, B
[2] gaudia] gadia Librone 1, B
The text of the seventh motet in Compère’s cycle Hodie nobis de virgine was edited according to Librone 1, ff. 177v–178r. The scribe (Scribe A) wrongly copied the words annuntiate (‘annuncite’ in B) and gaudia (‘gadia’ in B).
The topic of the motet is again the Nativity of the Lord and its two protagonists: the Virgin Mary and Jesus, who are both thematized in the motet.
For this motet Compère utilized two antiphons, traditionally used as first and second antiphons of Lauds on Christmas day (Quem vidistis pastores, Cantus ID 004455, and Genuit puerpera, Cantus ID 002938). The second antiphon in particular corresponds to two verses of Sedulius’ Carmen paschale (Coelius Sedulius, Carmen paschale, book II, lines 67–68). The hexametrical verse form of Sedulius’ hymn is maintained both in the antiphon and in Compère’s motet.
The motet was sung in place of the Agnus, as the loco rubric (‘loco Agnus’) states.
